A Study of Medical Costs according to the Number of Myopic Patients in Korea

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence of myopia and a cost per person by analyzing the number of patients enrolled for myopia and the medical fee.

Method: The outpatients and the in patients who visited a hospital for myopia were included in this study based on the patient sample data provided by the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016.

Result: The number of patients who came to a hospital was the highest in 2015 over the last three years and most of them were outpatients. It was shown that female patients visited more than male those in 2016, and the highest number of the females was in 2015. According to the medical institutions, the number of patients was the highest in clinics, but and the least in the health institutions. The number of patients by region was the highest in Seoul and Gyeonggi region and the lowest in Sejong city. The prevalence of myopia was 25.15 males and 30.17 females per 1,000 population. The prevalence in clinics was 25.90 which is the highest. The prevalence in Gwangju area was the highest accounting for 39.15 people. The average cost for medical care was the highest in Seoul and the cost for medical care has increased in the most regions over the last three years. The medial cost per person for three years between 2014 and 2016 was shown an increasing trend in all regions.

Conclusions: The number of myopic patients which occupies the largest portion of refractive errors and its medical cost are gradually increasing. Analysis results about prevalence rate and medical cost per person of myopic patients can be used as the basic data to predict and prepare myopic patients to visit clinics.
